Southern Italian Reds case: I am a self-confessed Primitivo nut; Poppet and I spent a fantastic day with Gregorio Perrucci at the Academia dei Racemi whilst we were on honey moon in Puglia (and they say that romance is dead!) and I / we have been addicted ever since! So imagine my delight when tasting through a spread of Italian wines at the London Wine Trade Fair earlier this year when we encountered not one but three outstanding examples, all authentic but each one different. To celebrate their arrival, we have put together a ‘sampling case’ – a must-try for all Italophiles and lovers of substantial red wines. At full retail you would be looking at £133.00 but they very kindly built some free stock into our first order so we can offer it for just £109.00 a saving of £24.00 or £2.00 per bottle! This case includes 2 bottles each of Passitivo IGT Puglia Primitivo 2008: about 30% of this wine is made using Appassimento – the same as for Amarone giving a dense, velvety wine, Palma Nera Nero d’Avola 2008: The Sicilian red signature grape – juicy and easy-drinking, Paololeo Salice Salentino Riserva 2008: A blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, this is an ethereal wine with cherries, leather and menthol aromas, Paololeo ‘Orfeo’ IGT Puglia Negroamaro 2008: Another indigenous Puglian variety that is worth getting to know – dense and rounded with spicy, coffee and tobacco, Paololeo Primitivo di Manduria 2008: Manduria on the Ionian coast is regarded as the best site for Primitivo and this robust but polished example doesn’t disappoint, Paololeo ‘Fiore di Vigna’ IGT Salento Primitivo 2008: ‘The Daddy’ – very old vines, lots of TLC including the full Amarone treatment – prunes, Christmas cake, cinnamon and a seamless oak.
